Reception - The Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage charts the development of children from birth until the end of the year in which they are five. It is built on the principle that all children are unique and that their learning and development is brought about by forming positive relationships with others, both adults and peers and by exploring concepts and the world in which they live, in an enabling environment- that is one which offers a wide range of stimulating opportunities to help them to make sense of their world. The Reception year provides the culmination of the Foundation Stage. At Elmlea we believe we offer an exciting, inspiring curriculum to engage our pupils and give them an introduction to the experiences and skills that they need to develop for life-long learning. We work towards achieving learning outcomes in seven areas of learning and development.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Communication and Language

Physical Development

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design

We deliver this curriculum through purposeful play inside and out and a variety of enjoyable, challenging activities, both adult-led and child initiated.

Our Reception Classes – Willow, Maple, and Oak

At Elmlea we have three Reception classes, each with a teacher and full time Learning Support Assistant (or two part time assistants). Additional support staff work with each class between 11am and 1.30 pm. The three classes share their own self- contained outdoor play area, which includes a grassy area with large climbing equipment. Before your child starts school, they will have the opportunity to visit the classroom and spend time with their teacher, having a story or short play session. Links will be made with their preschool setting to ensure a smooth transition. We believe it is in the interests of all our children to have time to settle into a new situation with a reduced number of their peers initially and so we operate a staggered entry system where children attend part time for the first two weeks of September.

All our new starter information is available on the Parents / Reception 2020/21 of the website.
